Delhi Metro revises upper limit of smart card top-up to Rs 2,000

Delhi Metro, grappling with a paucity of short change due to demonetization of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, has decided to temporarily increase the maximum limit of smart card recharge from existing Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000.

The scheme will be effective from today (Sunday) and will be in force at least till December 31 .

“The decision to increase the maximum top up limit has been taken with a view to facilitate commuters who might come with new currency notes of Rs 2,000 to top up their smart cards. The present maximum top up limit is of Rs 1,000. That is creating a problem in the availability of adequate short change to be returned to passengers, especially in view of shortage of new Rs 500 notes,” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said in a statement.

After the increase, passengers will be able to top up their Metro cards for a maximum value of Rs 2,000, thus putting the new Rs 2,000 currency notes to use.

“This is a temporary measure and will remain effective till December 31 only. It is expected that by that time enough currency of various denominations, specially Rs 500, will be available to hand over as change to facilitate transactions for a maximum top up limit of Rs 1,000 again,” a Metro official added.
