Metro pillars turning hot for Delhi polls

The Delhi Metro has become a hot topic ahead of the Delhi Assembly Elections as the BJP demanded a White Paper from the state government after multiple incidents of cracks and damage to the Metro network.

1The BJP Delhi unit Chief Vijay Goel alleged that DMRC had earlier rejected reports on the sagging of Noida City Centre platform. The cracks on the pillars at the Noida City Centre were not considered serious initially. It was only on Sept 28 following media reports that the DMRC admitted that there was deflection in one of the cantilever arms of the station that led to the sagging of its platforms. Several cracks have appeared on some pillars of Metro’s busiest line that carries eight lakh commuters daily between Dwarka and Noida, with experts calling for immediate repair to avert a disaster.

Claiming credit for initiating the Metro in Delhi, Goel said, “It may be recalled that the physical construction work on the Delhi Metro started on October 1, 1998, during NDA regime and the first lines of the Delhi Metro was inaugurated by A B Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister on December 24, 2002. It seems another major initiative, by the BJP-led NDA government, will lose its purpose if remedial steps are not taken immediately.” More info
