UAE expat students develop Metro app to track train, Nol card balance

Two students have come up with an app that tells you when the next Dubai Metro train is due, when the last train is – and gives you your Nol card balance.

1The free app, which even works ‘offline’ – meaning you don’t have to be connected to the internet to use it – is available in English and Arabic.

Ali Razzouk, one of the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) students behind the MetroMate app, said he came up with the idea after getting annoyed at standing on platforms having just seen train doors slam shut before his eyes.

“Using the metro on a daily basis, I often found myself frustrated by just missing trains, or dashing to the station only to have to wait for some time before the metro arrived at my stop,” said Razzouk.

British national Razzouk, a bachelor of computer science student, added the app was designed to “take the guesswork” out of travelling on Dubai Metro.

“It’s an accurate, real-time schedule to help users find the next and last trains, as well as journey times to their destination,” he said.

The app, which includes a full map of Dubai Metro, also has a Nol balance tracker, which allows users to keep tabs on their credit – and receive notifications when it is running low. More info
